Terms of service

Last updated 31 October 2026. These terms are in plain language. If you disagree with them, please don't use Ostella.

1. What Ostella is

Ostella is an add-on for the Anki flashcard program. It offers a study chat grounded in your own deck, suggests Anki ratings that you approve before anything is written, and compares lecture handouts with your cards. "We" and "us" mean the people who run Ostella; you can reach us through the contact page.

Ostella is a study aid, not medical advice. It is not a substitute for your school's or a licensing board's materials and must never be used for patient care. The AI can be wrong. You decide what to rely on and what is written to Anki.

2. Who can use it

You must be 18 or older. You must not use Ostella in a way that breaks the law, your school's rules, or the licenses of content you use. Do not enter patient names, record numbers, or other identifiable clinical information, in chats or handouts.

3. Your content

You are responsible for the material you type, check, search or capture with Ostella (handouts, notes, card text, anything on your screen), and for having the right to use it, including the terms of any website that restricts copying or screen capture. We use that material only to produce the result you asked for, as described in the privacy policy. Don't use Ostella to copy or redistribute material you are not allowed to share.

4. Free beta access

During the beta we give out free access codes. A free code gives a limited amount of AI use per day and in total, shown in the app as credits. Free access can be changed, limited or ended at any time.

5. Paid subscription and cancellation

• Price. After the beta, Ostella Pro costs US$10 per month. A promo code may lower the price for a limited time. It gives 1,000 credits of AI use per month, with a daily cap of 40 credits, shown in the app. We may change the price or the allowance; we will tell you before a change applies to you, and you can cancel before it does.
• Billing. Payment is handled by Stripe. The subscription renews every month until you cancel.
• Cancelling. You can cancel at any time from "Manage subscription" in the app, or by writing to us through the contact page. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for, and you are not charged again.
• Failed payments. If a payment fails and is not fixed, Pro access ends.

6. Fair use

We may limit or end access if a code is shared beyond its allowance, limits are bypassed, the service is used by automated means, or these terms are broken.

7. No warranty, limits of liability

Ostella is provided "as is", without promises that it will be error-free, always available, or that grades, explanations and suggestions are correct. It depends on third-party services (Anki, Google's Gemini models, Stripe) that we do not control. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the previous 12 months.

8. Not affiliated

Ostella is an independent project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anki, AnKing, AnkiHub, Google, the NBME, or the FSMB. USMLE is a mark of the FSMB and NBME.

9. Changes and contact

If these terms change in a way that matters, we will ask you to accept them again in the app. Questions, or a request to delete your data: the contact page.
